Terrence Carey, 88, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away Friday, November 11, 2011, at home with his family by his side. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 15, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church with Father Loren Kalinowski presiding and Deacon Larry Fussman assisting. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., on Monday from 3-5 and 7-9 p.m. with the Vigil beginning at 8 p.m. Visitation continues at the church on Tuesday one hour prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to CMU Athletics, CMU Park Library, or Sacred Heart Church. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Terry was born March 27, 1923, in Mt. Pleasant, son of the late Joseph P. and Ida M. (Brugge) Carey. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School in 1941 and received his Bachelors degree from Central Michigan University. After enlisting in the U.S. Navy, he attended officer training school (V-12 Program) at Bowling Green and Ohio State Universities. On June 28, 1947 he married Elinor Trix Wendt at Sacred Heart Church and continued his education at the University of Michigan, receiving his Masters degree, and eventually, his Ph. D. from Michigan State University. Terry was a very successful football coach at St. Johns High School from 1947-1952. He later coached at Niles High School from 1952-1959, spending two of those years as the schools Assistant Principal. The next two years he was Principal of St. Louis High School before serving as the Director of Admissions at MSU from 1961-1970. Returning back home to Mt. Pleasant in 1970, Terry was the Vice President of University Relations/Secretary Board of Trustees at CMU, retiring in 1982. In his retirement, he and his wife spent summers at Intermediate Lake in Central Lake and winters at North Myrtle Beach, SC. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed reading. Terry is survived by his wife of 64 years, Trix Carey; two sons, Mike (Sue) Carey of Mt. Pleasant and Mark (Kathy) Carey of Grand Rapids; three grandchildren, Shannon (Mark) Dillon of Sacramento, CA, Erin (Andy) Schor of Lansing and Sean (Katie) Carey of Lansing; four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Hannah, Sarah and James; his brother, Paul (Nancy) Carey of Rochester; and two nephews, Jeffrey DeLong and Michael Murphy. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Patricia Murphy and Betty DeLong.
