Thomas Will Craven

Thomas Will Craven, age 70, formerly of Mt. Pleasant, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Sunday, August 24, after a courageous two-year battle with ALS.

Born May 8, 1955, Tom was the first child of Thomas and Janet (Yuncker) Craven and the proud older brother to six siblings.  From an early age, Tom carried himself with quiet strength, humility, and a gentle sense of humor that would remain hallmarks of his character throughout his life.

On March 11, 1978, Tom married the love of his life, Diane Marie Handrich, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Mt. Pleasant. Together, they built a life rooted in love and faith, raising two children, Matthew and Ashley, who became Tom's greatest joy. He was a devoted father, always present at his children's sporting events, whether standing along the first baseline at the softball field or against the boards at the hockey rink. An avid skater and hockey player himself, Tom was proud to see both Matt and Ashley share in his passion for the sport.

Becoming a grandfather was one of Tom's greatest blessings. He cherished every moment with his grandchildren, Will and Jordyn, and embraced his role as "Papa" with unwavering love, encouragement, and pride.

For the majority of his working years, Tom was a loyal employee of Air Gas Great Lakes.  He retired in 2014. He worked diligently throughout his life, providing for those he loved and always willing to lend a helping hand.

Tom will be remembered as a man of quiet faith. Most recent, he was a member of Our Lady of Grace Parish in Sanford and former member of Sacred Heart Parish in Mt. Pleasant and Our Lady of Hope Parish in Clare (attending St. Henry in Rosebush). His life was defined by his steady presence, his loyalty, and the love he gave so freely.

Left to treasure his memory are his loving wife of 47 years, Diane; his children Matthew (Nikki) Craven of Laingsburg and Ashley (Mark) Kim of Sanford; his beloved grandchildren Will and Jordyn, along with their mother, Laura Gilmore Craven; his siblings Debbie Cook of Weidman, Connie (Rick) Sandal of Shepherd, Bill Craven of Beal City, Julie (Artie) Parker of Texas, Lori Loomis of Mt. Pleasant, and Mike (Julie) Craven of Brimley; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother-in-law, John Loomis.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to Ashley and Mark, who lovingly welcomed Tom and Diane into their home during his final months, allowing him to be surrounded by family and care in his time of greatest need. His love will remain with us always, and he will be missed beyond words.

Visitation will take place Monday, September 1, from 4-7 p.m. at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home. A Funeral Mass for Tom will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 2, at 11 a.m. at St. Henry Catholic Church in Rosebush with Monsignor Koper presiding, with visitation one hour prior. Burial will be in St. Henry Cemetery. A luncheon will be held immediately following at St. Henry Center.

Those wishing to honor Tom's memory are invited to consider a contribution to Our Lady of Hope Parish in Clare. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home.
