Thomas Lavoie, 53, of Mt. Pleasant, passed away unexpectedly Friday, October 7, 2011, at Clinton Memorial Hospital in St. Johns. The family will receive friends at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, on Monday, October 10, from 2-8 p.m. and Tuesday, October 11, from 2-6 p.m. His funeral will be held, and webcast live, at Resurrection Lutheran Church, 500 S. Brooke St., Alpena, at Noon on Wednesday, October 12, with Pastor Scott Meier officiating. There will be visitation at the church from 10 a.m. until the service begins at Noon. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Tom was born November 23, 1957, in Alpena, son of Thomas P. and Joan E. (Shenk) Lavoie. He spent most of his career as a teacher and coach for several schools including Bensenville High School in Illinois, Immaculate Conception High School in Elmhurst, IL, and Beal City High School from which he retired in 2010. He had recently been volunteering as an assistant basketball coach at Saginaw Valley University. Toms passion for coaching led him to numerous accolades during his career. He was involved with several basketball camps in Alpena, MSU, CMU, and the University of Texas. Besides his love of coaching, Tom enjoyed watching Tigers and Cubs games, tennis, jogging, reading, Blues and Jazz music, and just being outdoors. He was a member of MARSP and MEA. Tom is survived by his two daughters, Jacqueline (fianc, Brian Will) Lavoie of Galloway, OH and Danielle Lavoie of Mt. Pleasant; parents, Tom and Joan Lavoie of Alpena; two sisters, Jeri (Alan) Andon of Clarksburg, MD and Beth (John) DesOrmeau of Novi; and nieces and nephews, Natalie Andon of Austin, TX, Robert Andon of Annapolis, MD, and Taylor John DesOrmeau and Alicia DesOrmeau, both of Novi. He was preceded in death by his paternal and maternal grandparents, William and Edith Lavoie and Elmer and Helen Shenk. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Lupus Foundation (lupus.org, Lupus Foundation of America, Inc., PO Box 418629, Boston, MA 02241-8629), Resurrection Lutheran Church in Alpena (500 South Brooke Street, Alpena, MI 49707), or Beal City Sports Boosters Program (3180 W. Beal City Rd., Mt. Pleasant, MI 48858). Envelopes are available at the funeral home.
