Thomas Spero

Thomas Spero, 91, of Saginaw, passed away Sunday, October 23, 2022, at Green Acres Assisted Living in Mt. Pleasant. He was born June 17, 1931, in Saginaw, Michigan, son of the late John Roy and Dorothy (Purdy) Spero. Tom graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1949. He then served an apprenticeship with Wickes Brothers. In 1952 Tom enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the Army Security Agency during the Korean War.  After his honorable discharge he returned to Saginaw. He was offered a position in the automobile industry and relocated to the Detroit area. He spent his career with Engineering Service Inc. in Southfield, first as a die designer and retiring as chief engineer. Tom enjoyed fishing trips to Canada, history and reading nonfiction. He always had a project going, inventing, and modifying things to improve them. His family describes him as an amazing father and grandfather. In retirement, Tom lived in the Villages, FL before returning to the Saginaw area about four years ago. His marriage to Ellie McKittrick was blessed with two children, Dawn and Patrick. He later married Barbara Meyer-Boulengae. Tom is survived by his children, Dawn (Jim) Haufe of Mt. Pleasant and Patrick (Melinda) Spero of Chelsea; their mother, Ellie Spero of Mt. Pleasant; grandchildren, Ryan (Marysia) Deshone, Caitlin (Nick) Steele, Branden (Kaitlyn) Deshone, Cesar Haufe (Morgan Buxman) Joseph Haufe, Eric Spero, Dalton Spero, Ashley (Ryan) Booth, and Adam Rosentreter; and seven great grandchildren. Tom was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Barbara Meyer-Spero in 2005; and brother, Benjamin "Jack" Spero. The family is planning a memorial service in the Spring of 2023.
