Tony Eugene Poling

Tony Eugene Poling, 68, passed away on September 9, 2026, at Schnepp Senior Care & Rehab Center in St. Louis, MI. Born February 13, 1958, in Alma, Michigan to the late Melvin and LaVonne (Brecht) Poling. 

A 1976 graduate of Alma High School, Tony soon answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the Army from 1976 to 1978. After his military service, he built a career as a welder and mechanic for various heavy trucking companies. A master welder, he was also contracted through the government and worked overseas with the Marines, serving as the convoy commander. Through his work and service, he earned the respect of others by being dependable, skilled, and steady in all he did.

Tony was known as a man who meant what he said. He was stubborn, honest, and trustworthy, and those who knew him understood that his word mattered deeply to him. In many ways, his proudest accomplishment was simply being a man of his word. He was also remembered for his favorite saying: “if you are going to be dumb, you better be tough.”

He enjoyed life in ways that reflected both his adventurous spirit and his practical nature. He loved being a master welder, and he also enjoyed being a certified scuba diver, hunting, fishing, watching dirt track races at Crystal Race Way, and collecting guns. One memory that brought him particular pride was killing his largest buck in 2025.

In August of 2009, Tony married Leatha, who became the center of his world and the love of his life. Their marriage was a deeply important part of his life, and her place in his heart remained profound.

Tony is survived by his daughter, Tabitha Johnson of Kingsport, TN; Sister, Marjorie (Ken) Wiles of Riverdale, MI; grandchildren, Mikaylia Wilder, Tyler Cotten, Conner Keaton, Jazmynn Johnson, Marlie Johnson, and Unyque Davis all of Kingsport, TN; great-grandchildren, Manoah Johnson and Alani Johnson. 

He was preceded in death by his parents, Melvin and LaVonne (Brecht) Poling; and his wife, Leatha Poling. 

Tony will be remembered for his strength, his honesty, his deep love for his family, and the straightforward way he lived his life. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew and loved him.

Cremation has taken place and there will be no service per Tony's wishes.
