Vera M. Straus

Vera Straus, 94, of Beal City, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023, at the Isabella County Medical Care Facility. Vera was born May 27, 1929, in Isabella County, Michigan, daughter of Peter and Loretta (Bierschbach) Lorenz. She married Max Straus on October 14, 1950, at St. Philomena Catholic Church in Beal City. Vera was employed as a bookkeeper for several businesses, including Arthur Skeats CPA, Straus Builders, and Rosebush Lumber. Some of her hobbies were gardening, knitting, crocheting, traveling, and water aerobics. Vera is survived by eight children, Marjorie (John) Sheppard of Mt. Pleasant, Michael (Karen) Straus of Beal City, James (Aleasa) Straus of Rosebush, Robert (Christine) Straus of Wiesbaden, Germany, Karen (Kurt) Cotter of Mt. Pleasant, Maxine (Richard) Theunissen of Mt. Pleasant, Janice Sutton of Mt. Pleasant, and Teresa Straus of Weidman; 14 grandchildren, Gabe (Anne) Sheppard, Rachel (Bobby) Hazelton, Sarah (Brad) Grant, Jeffrey (Angela) Straus, Jennifer (Adam) Osbourne, Victoria (Andy) Roggenbuck, Julia (Alex) Halter, Mark (Katie) Straus, Keith (Kim) Cotter, Kal (Mandie) Cotter, Melissa (Robert) Mashatt, Justin Theunissen, Jessica (Steve Jackson) Sutton, and Charles Sutton; 31 great grandchildren, Anna, Joseph, Kathryn, Emma, Jacob, Sam, Ben, Max, Molly, Lizzy, Emily, Evelyn, Drake, Risa, Calvin, Theo, Alexandria, Danny, Matt, Eric, Luisa, Finn, Vera, Taylor, Cruz, Chloe, Kole, Beau, Bella, RJ, and Adamina; brother, Ron (Theresa) Lorenz of Beal City; sister in-law, Eva Lorenz; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Peter and Loretta Lorenz; husband, Max Straus; son, Mark Straus; and siblings, Jack (Helen) Lorenz, Laverne Lorenz, Rosemarie (Paul) Simmer, Mary Lou (Bob) Theisen, Clarence Lorenz, and Bill Lorenz. A Funeral Mass for Vera will be celebrated at 12 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Church in Beal City where she was a faithful member. Father Thomas Held will preside. Rite of Committal will be at St. Joseph Cemetery concluding with a luncheon at the Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant. The family will receive friends in the gathering room of the church on Friday from 4-7 p.m. with the rosary beginning at 7 p.m. Visitation continues Saturday one hour prior to Mass.
