Vernetta Carrick, 87, of Big Rapids, passed away Friday, April 20, 2012, at Mecosta County Medical Center in Big Rapids. Her funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 24, at Charles R. Lux Family Funeral Home, 2300 S. Lincoln Rd., Mt. Pleasant, with Pastor Paul Nestor of Trinity Baptist Church of Farwell officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Mt. Pleasant. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday from 2-4 and 5-7 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour prior to the start of the service. Memorial contributions may be made to American Lung Association. Envelopes are available at the funeral home. Vernetta was born March 2, 1925, in Isabella County, daughter of the late Allen and Iva (Fike) Weihl. She graduated from Coleman High School in 1943 and married Willard Carrick on January 14, 1945, in Coleman. She was employed by Central Michigan University for 24 years as a secretary at the Speech and Hearing Clinic. She retired in 1986. She and her husband had lived in Zephyrhills, FL for 17 years, returning to Michigan two years ago. She was an avid bowler and was inducted into the Mt. Pleasant Bowlers Hall of Fame. She enjoyed playing cards, dominos, yahtzee and dancing. Vernetta is survived by her husband, Willard of Big Rapids; son, Richard (Janine) Carrick of Big Rapids; five grandchildren, Andrew and Williard J. Carrick and Marianne (Leon) Wilcoxon, Melissa (Brett) Bittenbender and Richard A. Carrick; five great-grandchildren, Brittany, Andrew, Aydin, Collin and Jacob; siblings, Mildred (Duane) Acker of Greenville, Marian McDonald of Mt. Pleasant, Edwin (Linda) Weihl of Coleman and Carole (Jerry) Gualdoni of Canadian Lakes. She was preceded in death by a son, Ronald in 1999; sister, Velma Marble; and brother-in-law, Jerry McDonald.
