Obituary

Vina Mae Hammond, a cherished mother, devoted Christian, and respected member of her community, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, in Midland, Michigan. Born on June 27, 1945, in Harlan, Kentucky, Vina’s life was marked by unwavering dedication to her family, faith, and work.

Vina graduated from St. Charles Community High School, a milestone that she held dear throughout her life. Her career as a waitress spanned over five decades, a testament to her tireless work ethic and commitment to service. She began at LaBelle's, where she worked for four years, then moved on to Johnny Bonanza for ten years. Ultimately, Vina found her professional home at Tony's in St. Louis, Michigan, where she devoted more than 35 years before retiring in 2021. Her proudest accomplishment was not only her longevity in the profession but the genuine care and warmth she extended to everyone she served.

Her personal life was rich with love and cherished relationships. Vina’s first marriage to Russell Burnell was blessed with two beloved children, Russell and Amy Burnell. Later in life, she met and married Charles Hammond in 1997, embracing a shared journey of love and companionship.

Those who knew Vina remember her as a very good Christian woman whose caring nature touched all who met her. She was a true people person, with a heart that extended beyond human connections to include a special love for animals, so much so that she would lovingly "borrow" her son Russell's cat, Tiger, and dog, Suri. She delighted in family gatherings, where her face would light up with joy, illustrating the central place her family held in her life. She would often ask her son Russell to play worship music, reflecting the deep spirituality that sustained and inspired her.

Vina was an active member of Parkside Assembly of God for over 15 years, immersing herself in fellowship and faith. Her interests were varied and vibrant; she loved playing Skipbo, an activity that brought her great joy, and traveling to Sault Ste. Marie, reflecting her zest for life and new experiences. Among her achievements, she took immense pride in quitting smoking, reaffirming her strength and determination.

She is survived by her loving son, Russell Burnell of St. Louis; her siblings Rhoda Hoffman of Frankenmuth, Howard (Regina) Burkhart of Saginaw, Kathy Watson of Alma, and Fred (Jackie) Burkhart of Saginaw; as well as sisters-in-law Anna Burkhart of Bridgeport, Jackie Morris of Midland, and Shelby Stockwell of Zephyrhills, Florida. She also leaves behind several nieces and nephews who will carry forward her legacy of kindness and devotion.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Mattie Burkhart, her husband Charles Hammond Jr., her daughter Amy Burnell, and her brother George Burkhart.

Vina Mae Hammond’s life was a remarkable journey marked by faith, family, and service. Her memory will forever remain a beacon of love and strength to all who were fortunate to know her. She will be deeply missed but lovingly remembered by all whose lives she touched.
